What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a natural, hands-on therapy, which helps to restore and maintain good health without using any drugs or surgery. The word "chiropractic" comes from Greek, meaning "treatment by hand".
What kind of Education and Training do Chiropractors have?
Chiropractors are doctors (of Chiropractic), so it will come as no surprise that the training and education are very rigorous and demanding. Chiropractors have a minimum of 7 years of university level education, including no less than 4500 hours of classroom and clinical instructions at an institution approved by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE).
What does a Chiropractor do?
Doctors of Chiropractic diagnose and treat problems of the Neuromusculoskeletal system - this includes disorders involving the nervous system, muscles and joints of your body (spinal column, shoulder, elbow, knee, wrist, ankle, hands, feet, etc.).
Initially, a chiropractor will perform a thorough health history and physical examination in order to determine if your problem may respond to chiropractic care. Once this is determined, the chiropractor will develop a specific treatment plan, tailored to your condition. Treatment will most often include highly skilled spinal manipulations, soft tissue techniques and exercise rehabilitation programs to not only relieve the pain, but to fix the underlying problem as well.
What causes back pain?
Back pain occurs when the joints in the spinal column become inflamed and restricted, losing their normal range of motion. When this happens, the muscles along the spinal column (in the back and neck) tighten to protect the area, and nerves within the spinal column may also become irritated. This causes pain, and difficulty in performing normal everyday movements.
The stresses and strains of everyday living such as housework, gardening, desk work, lifting or even sleeping on the couch can cause spinal problems and lead to back and neck pain. Sports injuries, falls and accidents often result in painful and restricted joints as well. Children can also have spinal problems as a result of the birthing process, learning to walk, playing and falling down.
What is an Adjustment?
Your Chiropractor will use highly-specialized, hands-on adjustment techniques to increase joint movement, and relax tense muscles. Adjustments help to return your spine to optimum health by restoring and maintaining joint function. Chiropractic adjustments are comfortable and safe for the whole family including infants, pregnant women and the elderly.
What if I have a problem that doesn't involve my spine?
Chiropractors are well known for treating spinal conditions with the use of adjustments. However, Chiropractors are specialists in the neuromuscular skeletal system, which includes all joints, muscles and nerves in the body. Chiropractors are trained in the treatment of all types of injuries; so whether it's re-occuring back pain or headaches, an ankle that you sprained last week, or shoulder pain that you have had for years, there is a good possibility that your chiropractor can help!
